Operatives from the Ondo State police command have arrested a 21-year-old final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, identified as Olubodun for allegedly killing his 20-year- old female colleague, Ifeoluwa Adekunle.
Adekunle was stabbed to death in her room.
The suspect, a student of the Geology department, who lived in the same off campus hostel with the girl, allegedly stabbed her to death over her iPhone XR.
After the incident was reported to the police, detectives nabbed the suspect using the victim’s iPhone.
According to the police, the suspect confessed killing the girl because of her iPhone, saying he was attracted to the phone.
Olubodun, who had never had any interaction with the deceased, approached her and became friends with her only to kill her because of the phone.
A police source said, “The suspect confessed even before his parents that on that day of the incident, he approached the victim to transfer some films from her phone to his iPad.
“The unsuspecting female student obliged him, but didn’t allow him into her room. She told the suspect that her phone battery was low.
“The suspect then excused himself and returned with his power bank to charge the victim’s phone.
“He returned to the victim’s room very late and was allowed into the room where he grabbed the victim by the neck and stabbed her in the chest with a knife he brought along.
“The suspect then took the victim’s telephone, destroyed her SIM card and inserted his own SIM card.
“Police findings showed that he was making use of the phone during the day and hid it inside an uncompleted building close to the hostel.”
The police traced the call log of the suspect and it was discovered that the suspect had been using the phone to speak with his mother, who was subsequently arrested.
“The mother was arrested and later after interrogation, it led police detectives to her son’s hostel where he was arrested.”
Parading the suspect alongside other criminals, the state Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Oladipo said: “On February 2, a case of suspected murder was reported to the police that one Adekunle Ife-
oluwa (20), a 300-level student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, was found in a pool of blood at her off campus hostel and was rushed to the university’s health centre and later referred to a Specialist Hospital in Ikare-Akoko, where she was confirmed dead.
“In the course of investigation, the police discovered that the deceased’s phone was
missing.
“The police, through the use of modern technology, traced the phone to one Olubodun (surname withheld), a final year student of the same school, who is also a neighbour to the deceased in the hostel.
“The recovered phone led to further questioning of the suspect, who gave details of what happened in his confessional statement, of how he entered the deceased’s room, stabbed her on the chest with knife and stole her iPhone XR.”
The police commissioner said the suspect will be charged to court at the end of investigation.
