Mass Protest Rocks Ondo Tertiary Institutions Over Exemption from N35,000 Wage Award

 

 

The workers of the Ondo State-owned Tertiary Institutions have drawn the battle line with the Government for exempting them from the payment of approved wage award of N35,000.

 

The Chairman of Joint Action Committee —Ondo State Tertiary Institutions, Tayo Ogungbeni in a noticed conveyed to all branch Chairmen, after the leadership of JAC had met virtually, said “congress should be held on Monday and decision to embark on protest be communicated to the various management”

The notice read, “We should embark on mass protest simultaneously across campuses starting from our gates to campus with adequate press coverages and recorded videos should be posted to this platform.

“The mass protest across all the Tertiary Institutions will be held between Tuesday, 23rd TO Thursday, 25TH January, 2024.

“If the State Government refuses to do something about our plights we shall occupy Alagbaka immediately.

“Kindly ensure adequate mobilization of all our members for this mother of all protest across all the tertiary Institutions in Ondo state.

Joint Action Committee, comprises of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

Confirming the development in a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor of OAUSTECH and signed by SSANU chairman, Dayo Temola and two others, the unions ssid the protest would continue till fifth notice.

 

The letter reads, ” You will recall sir, that the Joint Action Committee of tertiary institutions in Ondo State met severally to appraise the funding of tertiary institutions in Ondo State which include indiscriminate release of subvention far from budgetary provision, non-payment of due emoluments of our members which include non-implementation of minimum wage of 2019 and wage award of N35,000 to members due to hardship occasioned by subsidy removal.

” The protest is coming as a result of series of plea, letters to the government and media advocacy which the government and all concerned has turned a deaf ear.

“The protest will start on 23rd of January, 2024 and continue everyday till further notice.”
