A professor of Gynecologist and Obstetrics from the University of Ibadan, Professor Akinyinka Omigbodun has said that Nigeria youths, especially those in the medical line cannot be stopped from traveling out of the country.

Professor Omigbodun stated this on Monday while speaking with journalists at the fourth distinguished lecture of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Ondo State.

The lecture, which was titled ‘Leadership, Mentorship and Academic Development in Nigeria’ was held at the university auditorium in honour of Late Emeritus Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe who was the first Vice Chancellor of the institution.

During his speech, Professor Omigbodun said that though the massive migration of Nigerians is affecting the academic development of the country, the youths cannot be forced to stay in the country as that will be against their freedom of movement.

The Don, however stated that the government and the citizens can strive to make things better in the country as that will help retain some of the professionals in the country.

According to him, “We cannot stop people from migrating to seek their personal welfare. We can’t hinder people who are seeking the opportunity to better themselves but we can make things better here in Nigeria so that we can retain many of our professionals and intellectuals to help develop our own country.

“Those who traveled, they are not entirely lost to the system. Many of them gave back in various forms. Some gave money and other resources, some gave time, they came back to engage in activities and programmes to assist those who are still learning in the country.”

Omigbodun also urged that Nigerians should stop the habit of cursing their leaders but rather praying for them to do what it is right in the interest of the country.
